The versatile Aleppo soap - in a class of its own
Aleppo soap's recipe dates back to the 8th century, which is why it is sometimes affectionately referred to as the grandmother of soaps. However, this image does not do it justice at all. It is the all-rounder in the bathroom, taking care of your skin in a highly effective way and your hair in a profound way, if that is what you want.
This is due to the unalterable fact that Aleppo soap is a 100% natural product. At least when you have the original in your hands. In the following article, we will show you how to recognise such a product and what the multi-tasking shower chunk can really do.
Sabun Ghar - the soap from Aleppo
Aleppo soap is a completely natural soap that originated in Syria. It can be used as a shaving, shower and laundry soap. It also serves as a hair shampoo and can even replace detergent when travelling.
-
The shower bar is a hard bar of soap that sits well in the hand for all body care procedures. Like many soaps, it is made from lye and olive oil. What makes it a very special bar, however, is the addition of laurel oil. This precious oil, extracted from both the trees and the leaves of the laurel, acts as a gentle cleanser. It is well tolerated by even the most sensitive skin.
-
This is primarily due to the manageable and purely natural ingredients. An original Aleppo soap contains only: olive oil, laurel oil, sodium hydroxide and water (= lye). The amount of laurel should vary a little depending on the skin type. As a basic rule, the drier the skin, the higher the laurel oil content should be. The more oily the skin and hair are, the lower it should be.
-
But Aleppo soap can do much more. The original is 100 % plant-based and contains no preservatives or animal testing. There are no dyes, fragrances, parabens, microplastics or silicones in the good stuff. It does not contain any chemicals and is biodegradable. This makes it an absolutely sustainable product!
Origin of Aleppo soap
To describe the origins of Aleppo soap, we like to take you on a journey into the past. Beauty, care and hygiene are not an invention of modern times. The ladies and gentlemen of antiquity were also clean people who were very concerned about their appearance. They wanted to appear well-groomed and spick and span.
As the name suggests, this unique soap comes from the ancient city of Aleppo, the most important city in the Levant region of Syria. Historically, Aleppo was a central trading hub, partly because it geographically straddled the famous Mediterranean Silk Road.
It is said that even the Egyptian queen Cleopatra was a fan of Aleppo soap before the first century AD. It is believed that the soap was first brought to Europe in the 11th century AD.
How Aleppo soaps are made
Turning oil into soap is a manufacturing process that requires craftsmanship - a quality that the legendary soapmakers of Aleppo possessed in abundance and still possess today. These magicians boil olive oil, lye and water in a large vat for three full days. This saponification process produces a thick, soap-like substance. Afterwards, the soap cookers add the laurel oil. Only this makes the Aleppo soap perfect. However, the soap is far from finished. The soap boilers then pour the mixture from the vat onto a large sheet of wax paper. In this phase it cools down and hardens. At this stage, the Aleppo soap has a bright emerald green colour.
Shelf life of Aleppo soap
After a certain time, the soap makers cut the entire surface into individual blocks with a special rake. The name of the manufacturer is stamped on the individual cubes and then the soap is allowed to mature until it is used. It is not unusual for this to take several years. During this process, the artisans make sure that the soap gets as much air as possible.
During the drying process, which is crucial for the quality of the soaps, the outside of the cubes turns golden brown while the inside remains deep green. If you cut an Aleppo soap in half, you will discover this beautiful colour combination.
The soaps can be stored and used for years; in fact, they look even better with time as the soap takes on a richer colour.
Advantages of Aleppo soap
Aleppo soap is a product that is valued for its naturally nourishing properties.
-
The soap is said to be ideal for sensitive skin. The laurel oil is primarily responsible for this. It has a strong cleansing effect and is partly antibacterial, so it can also take on impurities well. The olive oil is the necessary care for the skin and provides unexpected moisture.
-
Followers of natural beauty care have been raving about the quality of Aleppo soap for years. Since it is free of any chemicals, it is suitable for almost every skin type. The soap usually has a laurel oil content of between 2 and 60 %. A soap with a content of 20 to 40 % is generally of good quality and can be used by every skin type without hesitation.
-
A great advantage is that Aleppo soap is so versatile. It is suitable for the face, body and hair. In addition, it can be used for a gentle shave, both by the male and female sex. It is a fantastic all-in-one product that delights with its distinctive rich earthy scent.
-
Skin Care
The soap is perfect for all skin types, including skin prone to dermatitis and other itchy, inflammatory skin conditions. It is suitable for washing hands and face. It can also be taken into the shower or bath and used all over the body.

Hair care
The annoying thing about natural hair soaps is that they hardly lather when washed. This leads to the unpleasant feeling that the hair is hardly washed properly. Aleppo soap is a laudable exception to this rule. It dissolves all grease and dirt particles without irritating the scalp.
As a hair soap, Aleppo soap is often used for brittle, dry and fragile hair. The olive oil is also responsible for the care here. The more olive oil the Aleppo hair soap contains, the more nourishing it feels after washing.
The soap cleanses and nourishes the skin without irritating or drying it out and supports the self-regulating function of the skin. Due to its pH value, which is below 8, it is suitable for alkaline body care.
